UK Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert List with An additional 11 Countries

The UK government has placed 11 more countries to its official alert list concerning the risks of methanol contamination from tainted beverages.

The updated advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just last month, the government had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, in response to several serious cases including the fatal death of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can cause vision loss or loss of life within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Methanol is a harmful chemical typically used in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not intended for human consumption.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of spirits, commercial firms reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the purification method.

But in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is impossible to notice.

Government Recommendations for Tourists

Authorities representative the minister emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the indicators of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"While consuming alcohol overseas, choose trusted places and steer clear of local brews or unspecified beverages," the minister warned.

"In case something appears suspicious, such as a hangover that's way worse than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention fast."

The complete register of countries noted as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
